LAURA ATCHISON

The new bed's a hit

Laura Nation-Atchison
04-24-2008

Everyone likes the new bed.
And way too much.
I was up late one night a few weeks ago and started staring at one of those shopping channels on TV.
They’re really good at what they do, you know. If you’ve never tried it, don’t.
You’ll be buying something within 15 minutes, I betcha.
Anyway, I was a prime candidate that night, and doing something about the bed has been on my mind for a year or two.
And nowdays being just too lazy and stingy to go out and spend my time off going from store to store, the idea of checking out the shopping channels sort of appeals to me.
Plus, what else there to do when it’s 1 a.m. and you can’t stand “Love Boat” reruns?
Anyway, I’ve been craving a not real down but down-like bed thing ever since I stayed in a motel that had them and I’ve needed do something about the bed in general for quite a while.
When I tuned in to the convenient shopping network, there it all was, right in front of me.
The “synthetic” down thing was just what I wanted and believe it or not, well under the price you’d expect.
Plus, it was the “special” that night.
Lucky me.
I started for the phone, but there was more.
They showed a comforter thing in all my favorite colors, some gold, a little yellow and beige and my most favorite, kind of a terracotta shade.
The design was sort of like a tapestry, not too loud, but not boring.
I got that, too. And the pillow covers, the bed skirt, some extra pillows done in the same fabric and new bed pillows, too.
Then they showed the sheets…matching, of course, with the colors in the comforter embroidered on the edges.
Nice. Got them, too.
But I really got a deal. Let’s just say I spent about what I would in two weeks buying people and animal food.
Not bad.
I had doubts, though. Not everything I’ve bought on these programs has been what you’d call stellar. A few things I’ve bought as gifts have stayed in the boxes they arrived in.
But this time, I was impressed with everything they sent. Matter of fact, I was a little surprised at the quality.
After a few days, I finally got around to getting everything out and making up the bed. I sort of expected it not to fit right or something else would be wrong, remember what a good deal it all was. Too good to be true, I still considered.
But instead, everything fit just right and went into place without a whole lot of struggle. When it was all over with, even Gruffy said he was impressed. (You know, most of the time men just grunt when you ask them how they like something like that…)
OK, so the inaugural night finally came to try out how the “new bed” felt.
I think I said something like “Well, it feels pretty good, huh?”
Gruffy agreed, we drifted off, thinking my “good deal” was exactly that.
Since then, it turns out everyone else in the house likes the good deal, too.
This morning, there were seven of us enjoying the new bed.
Not just Gruffy and me, here’s the list.
Under the covers at Gruffy’s feet lay Taco. Next to her on top, Prissypot was curled into a comfortable ball and just the other side of Gruffy, Pup, the devil dog had her spot.
Eddie, who’s a long tube of a cat, was stretched sideways beside me taking up about a third of the space and Tuffy was somewhere on my pillow.
That’s the way everyone wants to wake up, eh?
At least it’s unanimous.
Like I said, everyone seems to love my good deal.
