Nim's Island

Past child star Jodie Foster and Hollywood's current go-to girl Abigail Breslin team up for this sturdy family adventure adapted from Wendy Orr's novel. Breslin stars as the title character, a fearless young girl left alone on an island after her scientist dad (Gerard Butler) vanishes. In need of a father figure, she strikes up an e-mail correspondence with what she thinks is her literary hero (also played by Butler in fantasy sequences), but her pen pal actually is a neurotic author (Foster) who hasn't left her apartment in ages. The DVD and Blu-ray disc come with a huge selection of deleted scenes, three featurettes and commentary from Foster, Breslin and husband-and-wife directors Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett.

The Counterfeiters

The 2007 Academy Award winner for foreign-language films spins an unusual twist on the idea of collaborating with the enemy. Based on a true story from World War II, the Austrian film follows the convoluted path of a master counterfeiter (Karl Markovics) who is thrown into a Nazi concentration camp but gets preferential treatment by leading a team that prints phony Allied currency to weaken the economies of Germany's adversaries. Accompanying the film on DVD and Blu-ray are deleted scenes, an interview with Markovics, a question-and-answer session and commentary with director Stefan Ruzowitzky and a conversation with a real-life counterfeiter and Holocaust survivor.

Starship Troopers

Giant bugs are back to take on Earth in this adaptation of Robert Heinlein's sci-fi novel, which makes the leap to Blu-ray accompanied by the debut of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder and the previous small-screen sequel Starship Troopers: Hero of the Federation. Casper Van Dien, who starred in the 1997 big-screen original but skipped the earlier sequel, returns for Marauder, which co-stars Jolene Blalock in a tale of human soldiers rescuing trapped comrades on a planet infested with huge insect enemies. The original Starship Troopers and Marauder are available as separate Blu-ray releases, while all three movies come in a Blu-ray boxed set. New DVD releases of all three also are available.

Pete Seeger: The Power of Song

The life, times and music of folk-protest patriarch Seeger are chronicled in this documentary that features interviews with the singer and admirers including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie and Peter, Paul and Mary. The focus is on Seeger's solo influence and the blacklisting he endured during the McCarthy era. DVD extras include deleted footage and five short films from the Seeger family archives on such topics as playing banjo and making your own steel drum.

I Got the Feelin': James Brown in the '60s

The hardest-working man in show business graduated from godfather of soul to keeper of the peace after Martin Luther King Jr. was slain in 1968. The night after the assassination, Brown's concert at the Boston Garden aired live on public television as his plea to the city's mourning and angry residents to stay off the streets and avoid a riot. This three-disc set includes the documentary "The Night James Brown Saved Boston," chronicling that evening through footage from the show and interviews with Brown collaborators, activist Al Sharpton and people who attended the concert. The set also includes the full videotaped concert from that night along with a show Brown did at the Apollo Theater the previous month.
