LAKESIDE MAGAZINE

Reeves home has lake view from each room

By June Winters
10-19-2005

Susan and Mike Reeves left the waters of the bay that surround Ono Island at Orange Beach for the calm, peaceful waters of Logan Martin Lake, and they love it.
Their beautiful home is located at Oak Point, and there’s a perfect view of the lake from every room in the house. The front door is beveled glass with matching panels on both sides and transoms. Floors are hardwood with Oriental rugs.
The conversation room is furnished with a spacious curved couch facing a magnificent oversized fireplace made of stacked, native stone.
There’s a pool table and a corner bistro table with bar stools. Susan says this is their favorite spot for morning coffee. "There’s a perfect view of the sunrise over the lake, and we have a wonderful nature show every morning."
The cathedral ceiling and "wall of windows" bathes the area with soft sunlight.
Glass doors open to a hallway with a floor-to-ceiling window at the end.
At the left end of the hallway is daughter Skylar’s bedroom, which is decorated with purple accents and purple carpet. A hand-painted screen featuring a beach scene is a focal point, and there is also a walk-in closet and adjoining bath.
Mike’s study is located here. It’s furnished with lots of built-in book shelves, a handsome desk and computer equipment. Triple floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the lake.
There’s a guest bedroom with adjoining bath, and a feature in this bedroom is a unique stuffed beaver "dressed for a party." It was a gift from one of daughter Lauren’s high school friends.
The den, kitchen and breakfast room are in an open area with plenty of light and a gorgeous view of Logan Martin Lake "any way you want to look."
Counters and the kitchen island are beautiful "verti-fire" Australian granite tile. Cabinets and appliances are black, complemented by black-and-white floor tile. Many of the kitchen cabinets feature open fronts with ornate carving. They were custom made by Steve Parsons.
The formal dining room features a copper ceiling and bay window with transoms. The hardwood floor is complemented with an Oriental rug. Walls in this room are a beautiful copper with blackberry wash.
The den features a
The recreation area has a wall of windows for enjoying the lake while "working out." There is also a skylight.
Susan’s study adjoins the recreation area. Floors have a soft beige Berber carpet, and a focal point is a painting done by a cousin of Susan’s. The scene is from Sarasota, Fla., where the Reeves’ yacht is docked.
There is also a beautiful grandmother clock in the study that belonged to her maternal grandmother, the late Martee Wright. It is a treasure of Susan’s, as is her collection of handmade hurricane crosses.
The master bedroom adjoins Susan’s study, and walls in this room are a perky orange. Susan laughingly says it’s the same shade as Golden Rule barbecue sauce.
Christina Wentzel of Anniston painted the walls in the master bath. The faux design is in white and lavender.
There’s a step-up Jacuzzi with a large cathedral window overlooking the lake, a large glass shower, his and hers dressing areas and walk-in closets.
Also located in the area are a large laundry room and half-bath.
Walk across a beautiful native stone patio and down a cobblestone walk and you find the guest house, which Susan and Mike have named "St. Somewhere Else." Their home at Ono was christened "St. Somewhere," and they wanted to recreate just a little of their Orange Beach house here.
The guest house was once a garage. Now, there’s a den, bedroom with adjoining bath, and a kitchen. A door just off the kitchen opens to the boat house. Rooms in the house are painted bright colors, and the family’s friend, "the Pelican" stands guard at the door.
So they wouldn’t miss the beach too much, Mike had truckloads of sand hauled in and built their own beach next to the guest house. The Reeves instantly named it "Graham’s Beach," for their nephew who visits them often. There’s a lakeside patio and handsome pontoon boat.
"We love living on Logan Martin Lake," Susan said. "Water is so important to us. It has always been our peace, and this lake is wonderful."
