MusicFest features classic, alternative, hip hop

The seventh annual MusicFest 2002 is May 3 and 4 in downtown Sylacauga.

This year the show features hip-hop star Tone Loc, new alternative artist Joe Stark and Classic Rock Stars from Rare Earth, Sugarloaf, Iron Butterfly and Cannibal and the Headhunters.

In addition local and state musicians are set to perform.

Tickets are $12 in advance for both days and $15 each day of the festival. Children 6 and under are free. There will be rides and games for children.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at Serra Chevrolet-Olds-Honda, Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, Sylacauga True Value and at Sylacauga Today.

The Classic Rock Stars are the headliners Friday, May 3 at 9 p.m. The All Stars are Peter Rivera from Rare Earth, Jerry Corbetta from Sugarloaf, Mike Pinera from Iron Butterly and Dennis Noda.

Rivera is the lead singer, drummer and founder of Rare Earth, the first white band to sign with Motown. With eight gold albums, three platinum, and six top five singles, Rare Earth's hits include Get Ready, Losing You, I Just Want to Celebrate, Born to Wander and Hey Big Brother. Their Get Ready album is honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Corbetta is the lead singer, keyboardist, founder and leader of Sugarloaf. Sugarloaf produced two platinum albums and three gold albums. Their top singles include Green-Eyed Lady and Don't Call Us, We'll Call You. He also wrote, recorded and toured with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Pinera is the original lead singer and guitarist for Blues Image, whose hits include the 1970s song, Ride Captain Ride. He also wrote and toured with Iron Butterfly, whose hits include Inna Gadda Da Vida and Butterfly Bleu. Inna Gadda Da Vida is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Noda is a bass guitarist and the leader and musical director for the group Cannibal and the Headhunters. Land of a Thousand Dances has become the all-time party anthem.

Tone Loc headlines MusicFest Saturday, May 4 at 10 p.m. His many hits include Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina.

He still continues to receive radio play across the country and has sold over 8 million units. Tone has also received many awards including the American Music Awards and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards.

His popularity also grew with such notable film roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Heat, Ford Fairlane, Poetic Justice, Posse and others. He has also done guest spots on TV including Roc, Touched By An Angel and News Radio.

Tone has also lent his voice to several animation projects including the feature films BeBe Kids, Ferngully, The Last Rainforest and Jamar The Bear.

The schedule for May 3 is: Jim Hopkins of Sylacauga, 5 p.m. to 5:20 p.m.; Washington Trio of Sylacauga, 5:20 to 5:50; Wandering Soles, 6 to 6:45; Angry Blue Planet, 7 to 7:45; Blue Water, 8 to 8:45 and Classic Rock All Stars, 9 p.m.

Set to perform May 4 are: Johnny Culver Jr. and The Band One Way of Sylacauga, 12 to 12:50 p.m.; The Andy Kinman Band of Auburn/Opelika, 1 to 1:45; Distilled of Childersburg, 2 to 2:45; Two Bricks Shy of Birmingham, 3 to 3:45; Mystic Window of Gadsden, 4 to 4:45; Fedora, 5 to 5:45; Smear of Sylacauga, 6 to 6:45; Infinity of Sylacauga, 7 to 7:45; The Peeping Toms of Sylacauga, 8 to 8:45; Joe Stark, 9 to 10 and Tone Loc, 10.
