HOME FOLKS

Homefolks in Talladega

June Winters
09-22-2006

Welcome autumn! Today is the first day, and already you can feel it in the air!
Things are busy at Heritage Hall. Art classes for adults are being offered on Thursdays, 4-7 p.m., and Tommy Moorehead and others are preparing for a big event coming in November and December. An exhibit, “Courageous Journey” honoring Helen Keller will be featured. Twenty eight artists from throughout the state have documented this famous lady’s life. The exhibit was curated by Georgine Clark, and the showing at Heritage will be the final exhibit. And remember, if you haven’t seen the exhibit of magnificent photographs by Jennifer Alam of Clay County, you have one more week to do so.
Evelyn (Mrs. Bill) McGehee was in Pensacola, Fla., last week to visit daughter Katie and Scott Collins and the two grands, Conner and Wiley.
Sibyl Bynum was in Orlando, Fla., to visit her daughter Marcia and Tommy Limbaugh. Special highlights were a visit to the Orlando Museum of Art, where they saw an exhibit of French and American Impressionist art, and shopping at the Millennium Mall.
Sibyl also enjoyed visiting with Tommy and Marcia’s friends Steve and Brenda Sloan. Steve and Tommy have coached together, and now the Sloans have retired to Orlando.
Dr. Al and Marian Yoe were in Opelika last weekend to attend the christening of great granddaughter Sarah Cosby Callaway Mann at Opelika’s First United Methodist Church. Parents are George E. and Caroline Mann.
Grandparents, George and Lucretia Mann attended as did maternal grandfather Gene Cook of Montgomery; Caroline’s brother, Brent and Elizabeth Cook and Virginia of Dothan; and George E.’s sister, Sandy and Rick Brown and Jacob of Opelika.
Afterwards the family enjoyed a luncheon celebration at Christie’s Restaurant in Opelika.
Sue Nicholls will have weekend company. Charlotte (Mrs. Larry) Williams is coming from St. Simon, Ga., to visit Talladega friends, and Saturday night, they will all join for dinner at Fincher’s.
Tom and Elaine Richardson had company this week. Tom’s sister, Christine Reynolds visited from Cleveland, Tenn.
Kappa Kappa Iota met Sept. 18 at Café Royale. Attending the meeting were Beverly Pope, Colleen Crosby, Jane Patterson, Reba Stewart, Janis McCardle, Edith Bonner, Melba Sermon, Sue Robbins, Amy Hubbard, Lela Locklin, Martha Nabors, Peggy Holcomb, Jan Floyd, Gail Joiner, Bonnie Miller and Elaine Stephens. The Christmas Tour of Homes, coming in December, was discussed.
Doris (Mrs. Dan) Munroe hosted her Thursday bridge group for play and lunch. Enjoying her hospitality were Martha Hahn, Bobbye Clark, Mary Frances Peeples, Becky Clark, Mary Sue Gaines, Margie Martin and guest, Mary James Harris, who was winner of high score.
Everyone who attended the concert at First Presbyterian Church last Sunday evening is talking about how wonderful the music was. Featured were Marianne Miller, Lea Lewis and the Hand Bell Choir of First Presbyterian. A reception followed in the church Fellowship Hall.
Your Childersburg friends are extending a cordial invitation to come and join them this Saturday, Sept, 23 for their annual Coosa Fest.
Breakfast will be served at the Grist Mill and at 10 a.m., “Music on the Creek” will feature Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel music.
There will be an antique car show and motorcycle show from 2-5 p.m., and birthday cake and ice cream will be served at the Rainwater Museum 3-5 p.m. There will be more music by local talent, and a retail block party, where you can “shop till you drop!” The day’s festivities will end at 9 p.m., with a fireworks display.
Please send me your recipes! There are only eight more days to get your recipes in for this year’s Holiday Cookbook. The recipes are coming in slow this year, and I need to hear from you. This annual publication is one of our favorites here at the Daily Home, we need to include one or two of your favorite recipes.
