The place to be this evening is Comer Museum for the reception honoring art students from Sylacauga High School and Nichols-Lawson Middle School who are exhibiting art at the museum this month. The reception will be held 6:30-8 p.m., and admission is free. You’ll enjoy meeting the artists, plus an evening of food, art and live entertainment. This Saturday, April 12, 11 a.m, until 3 p.m., there will be a salad luncheon plus barbecue at St. Thomas Church, located at 503 South Main. You may “eat in” or carry-out, and tickets are $5. For ticket information, call Fred Pearson at 249-8024, or Betty Riggins at 245-4264. Tickets will also be available at the door. All proceeds from the event go to support church-wide services. Mary Tom and James Abernathy have a very special visitor. Their granddaughter, Asia Abernathy, is visiting from Coupville, Wash. Asia is the daughter of the Abernathy’s son James and Susan Ann Abernathy. James is stationed in Washington with the United States Navy, serving aboard the Nimitz. Mary Tom has been treating Asia to a lot of local sightseeing, plus a day of horseback riding, and today, they’re in Huntsville. Asia will visit the Space Center and also visit her two aunts, Margaret Vance and Martha Beckett who live in the Space City. Wedding bells will ring Saturday, May 24 for Rachel Callaway and Sam Holt. They will be married at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Birmingham, with a reception following in the church Life Center. There have been parties to honor the soon-to-be-weds…. A “Tool and Garden Fiesta” was given at the home of Martha and Ed Zedaker on Saturday evening. Guests were served delicious homemade Mexican food by the hosts and co-hosts, Martha and Randy Boyd, Cheryl and Bobby Cummings, Bridget and Hollis Ezell, Kathy and David Vought, Pam and Ed Zedaker, Debra and Tim McDaniel, Molly and David Currie and Janice Williams. On Sunday afternoon, there was a bridal tea at the home of Sue Smitherman. The ladies wore hats for the special occasion, and assisting Mrs. Smitherman were Mary Brooks, Beth Turner, Libby Fielding, Jean Ann Campbell, Janet Adams, Vicki Winter, Connie Wright, Joyce Snowden, Ashley Bice, Sherri King, Grace Davis, Lydia Davis, Linda Dickson and Linda Bice. The groom’s mother, Lynne Holt and his sister, Jill came from Knoxville, Tenn., for the festivities, and his sister Haley joined them from Memphis. The bride’s maternal aunt, Mary Gulin came from Clarksville, Tenn. John and Teresa hosted an engagement party for Rachel and Sam at their home on the last weekend in December. In addition to a host of local friends, out-of-town guests included Lynne and Jill Holt, mother and sister of the groom from Knoxville, Tenn.; and Rachel’s relatives: Betty Callaway, grandmother from Point Clear; John Callaway, grandfather from Selma; Marilyn Callaway, aunt and cousins, Caroline, Allen and Ben from Selma; Rita and Larry Martens grandparents from Pell City; Jill and Joe Majerus, aunt and uncle and cousins, Joey and Johnny from Elk Grove, Ill., Mary Gulin, aunt and cousins, Daniel and David from Clarksville, Tenn., and friend, Sarah from Minnesota, Lt. Col. Ted (uncle) and Garlan (aunt)Martens and cousins, Sarah and William from Harker Heights, Texas. Joanne Rea is delighted to announce the arrival of her first great grandchild, and it’s a boy! Grady John Watt arrived April 6th, weighing 8 pounds and 3 ounces. He was 21 ½ inches long. He is the first born of Allison and Sandy Watt of Courtney British Columbia, Canada, and maternal grandparents are Dave and Elizabeth (Rea) Shivas of Ft. Murray, Alberta Canada. Sharing great grandparent honors with Joanne are John and Eve Shivas of Stratford, Ontario Canada, and his very proud aunt is Heather Shivas, a student at the University of Vancouver, Pharmacy School. Congratulations are certainly in order for Sylacaugan, Nikki Allen. A junior at Auburn University, Nikki was one of the top five young ladies vying for this year’s “Miss Auburn!” Nikki is a 2005 graduate of Sylacauga High School and is majoring in political science at Auburn. She is the daughter of Sandy James. Villa (Mrs. Jim) Wright entertained members of her Wednesday bridge group last week for play and lunch at Sylacauga Country Club. Places were set and tallies marked for club members Annette Gaston, Jean Camp, Beryl Pitchford, Martha Sims, Mable Ray, Margaret Finn and guests.
