The Ritz Theatre’s relationship with Red Mountain Theatre Company continues this coming June 16-20, when they present their Youth Musical Theatre Workshops at the Ritz. This will be the first time they have ever taken their acclaimed workshops outside of Birmingham! They will bring in working professionals from New York and Los Angeles to conduct these sessions consisting of two groups – a junior workshop for 5-6 year-olds and a youth workshop, 7-18 year olds. The Daily Home is a co-sponsor for these workshops, and ads will appear in Saturday and Sunday’s papers with details for enrollment. Be on the look-out since enrollment in both workshops is VERY limited. This year’s Miss Motorsports Hall of Fame is coming Saturday, July 26, with divisions for ages 3-25. Congratulations are certainly in order for Elizabeth Overton. She is the 1-A state champion in pole vault, clearing 7 feet and 6 inches! Elizabeth is the daughter of Lily and Dyron Overton, and a student at Donaho. And congratulations to Susan McKinnon Haynes. She finished law school in December, took her bar exam in February, and will graduate May 18. She has joined the firm of Gaines, Gaines and Rascoe. Susan is the daughter of Rita and Johnny McKinnon and is married to Will Haynes. And – the young lady who won this year’s coveted title of “Grand Duchess” at the Natchez River Festival in Beaumont, Texas has multiple Talladega ties! She is Alice Carroll Johnson, the daughter of Talladega native Houston Johnson. Her grandparents are Chock Johnson and the late Joanna Johnson., and her very proud great-grandmother is Agnes Martin. Elaine and Tom Richardson are just home from a great spring trip to Norwell, Mass. They visited daughter Joy and Frank Smith, and grandson Richey. They especially enjoyed attending a band concert and hearing Richey perform. While they were there, Tom celebrated a birthday and he and Elaine celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The double celebration was held at the famous Legal Seafood Restaurant at Greentree in Boston. Sue Nicholls joined her son Dr. Barry Nicholls and wife Anna for a trip to Charleston, S.C., for the graduation of Barry’s daughter, Brooke Nicholls Mack. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in political science and Latin American and Caribbean studies and a minor in Spanish. Also attending were Brooke’s mother, Margaret Nicholls; her mother, Mrs. John Collins of Anniston; her brother, Allen Graham Nicholls; and his friend, Shelley English, both students at Auburn University; and her mother-in-law, Dr. Marian Crem/Mack. On Friday, they attended the Honors College Awards, where Brooke was named outstanding student and presented departmental honors for the School of Political Science and inducted into Pi Sigma Epsilon Honor Society. A reception followed the ceremony. Saturday’s commencement was held in the Cistern Yard on campus, and that evening Margaret and Barry hosted a seafood dinner party for the family. Also at the College of Charleston for spring graduation at Honors College and commencement, were Norma and Jack Bowden. Their granddaughter Stefanie Cristensen, graduated cum laude from the School of Political Science, and they too, enjoyed the receptions following both events. Attending with them were Stefanie’s brother, Sam,; her paternal grandparents, Neal Christensen, (Ret Gen. U.S. Army) and Sarah of Sun City, Ariz. A family dinner celebration Saturday evening was hosted by Suzan and Steve. There’s a pink bow out at Mary and Pearino Gaither’s home to announce the arrival of their new granddaughter! Little Anne Gait Nall made her debut April 29 in Montgomery, weighing 7 pounds and 13 ounces. She was 20 inches long. Proud parents of the new arrival are Kim and Jonathan Nall and she has a big sister, Mary Kenyon. Sharing grandparent honors with the Gaithers are Leonard and Peggy Nall of Lowndesboro, and great-grandmother, Mary Godwin of Pineapple.June May 15 Tall. Pastor Laura Brown and her congregation also congratulate the Talladega High School seniors. A Mother’s Day and birthday celebration was hosted last Sunday at Sandra and Billy Ross’s home in Hobson City. In attendance were Cleo and Jackie Truss and Olivia and Ali, of Hoover, and Stephen Truss and TJ and Steve, all of Talladega. Stephen was happy to share the day and his 37th birthday with his mother and sister-in-law. Betty Lue Turner had a wonderful Mother’s Day celebration with her children. She is recuperating at Talladega Health Care Center and celebrated with Minnie T. Cochran and Willie (Jake) Turner of Ossining, N.Y.; Tee Ester Turner of Newport News, Va.; and Yvonne T. Wilson and Gene Turner, both of Talladega. Doris T. Mack of St. Augustine, Fla. plans to visit her mother later. Wishing Ms. Turner a speedy recovery. Katie Parnell of Talladega and her sister and sister-in-laws enjoyed a pre-Mother’s Day celebration at the home of Sharon Shaw in Birmingham. The ladies were lovely in their pink and white attire and shiny tiaras. Plenty of conversation, games and prizes were enjoyed by everybody. Afterward, they dined on Cornish hen, squash casserole, carrot casserole, rice pilaf, green beans, broccoli salad, macaroni and cheese, rolls, home made pound cake with strawberries and tea. Enjoying the festivities along with Katie and Sharon were Mary J. Parnell of Anniston, Dorothy Parnell, Brenda Parnell and Zanitha Matthews of Birmingham and Rosalind Stewart of Atlanta. The Westside Drewry Alumni Association met Tuesday at the B.N. Mabra Center from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m The highlight of the evening was bids from caterers for the get acquainted reception, picnic and grand ball, souvenirs for alumni, someone to lay out and print alumni books, menu and price for the dinner for the Rev. Oliver Morris and guests and items needed for display (pictures, etc.) Rev. Morris will be guest minister at Greater Ebenezer Sunday, following the activities and he plans to bring approximately 8- to 100 guests. John D. Lawler still has his football jacket and it will be on display. Present for Tuesday’s meeting were K.D. Dickerson (president), Juanita C. McClellan (secretary), George Burroughs (treasurer), Barbara Davis, Florence T. Nicks, Sandra D. Chapman, Rosa C. Wallace, Edith D. Beck, Richard Rogers, Walter (Red) Russell and Seaborn Harmon. The association meets every Tuesday night at 5 p.m. and you’re cordially invited.
