Somehow, it all happens every year. The people turn out, the volunteers make things work and the Arc of North Talladega County keeps providing programs and services for adults with delayed development. That’s what Sunshine Saturday is all about. Held for more than three decades now on the first Saturday in May at veterans Park, Sunshine Saturday is a full day of entertainment, food and activities for families. The event is held rain or shine. The countdown is on this week for the big fundraiser and committee members met Wednesday to make final decisions and make sure enough volunteers have been recruited. It takes at least 200 to 250 people to staff the event, and really, it’s the more the merrier, said Brenda Burt, executive director for The Arc of North Talladega County. From tearing and packaging the 24 cent tickets for sale to taking up tickets or helping with games, there are all kinds of jobs for volunteers to do, Burt said. Usually, about 2,500 people attend Sunshine Saturday, Burt said, providing support for the organization. Forty thousand tickets will be packaged and prepared for sale at various rides and games and flyers advertising the event are on their way to local schools. Youngsters can expect to have the great time they have every year, using their tickets to take part in games and win prizes and taking rides on trains and cars and swings, even an oversized slide. Some of the friends they love best will be back, like Ronald McDonald and a big friendly pup along with a fuzzy red puppet made famous on television through the years. Food offerings are the classic treats kid like best, hamburgers and hot dogs, barbecue and home baked goodies and lots of other things to try. Entertainment this year includes some traditional favorites along with some new names, said committee head Donelle Proctor. Les Stephens of Talladega will sing, along with Carol Wells, Donna Hayes and Mark Taylor. The group Endless Grace will also perform, along with the duo of Jeb and Hank Fannin. Also performing are students from Dance Dynamics and members of the Anniston County Western Dance Club. Events begin at 10 a.m. and continue through the afternoon. There is no admission charge, but various small charges for activities and games. Families are encouraged to bring along lawn chairs and enjoy the entire day. Volunteers are always welcome to help out, even this close to the event it’s not too late to offer help. “You’ll feel so tired at the end of the day, but you’ll feel so good about it,” Burt said. Those wishing to help out may call Burt at 256/362-9064.
