Arts Camp gets going Monday!
06-07-2008
Two new teachers for Arts Camp in Talladega add new creativity to the camp experience. Hosted by Heritage Hall Museum, two sessions of camp meeting June 9 through 12 and the other, the week of July 7 through 11. Space for students in the first session has been filled, but students can still register for the second session, said Amy Locklin, museum assistant. Joining the teaching staff this year are Beth Payne in the visual arts area and Tiffeny Roberson, for dance instruction. Payne is an art teacher at Eden Elementary School in Pell City where she works with students from kindergarten age through fifth grade. In her personal art interests, she primarily focuses on watecolors. Payne learned about Arts Camp through Susannah Herring, who also teaches at Eden Elementary and has been a music teacher for Arts Camp for years. Payne is part of the Tuesday night art class taught at Heritage Hall by artist in residence, Tommy Moorehead. Roberson has been dancing since she was 2-years-old, when her mother signed her up for dance classes to help correct the way she walked. “I walked on my toes, and they thought this would help,” she said. She’s been dancing since, and is preparing to open her own dance studio. Roberson is working on a degree in business administration and is a graduate of the Cornerstone Christian School in Columbiana. She says her dance experience includes many forms, with ballet and hip hop her likely favorites. Special events planned for Arts Camp include a demonstration from professional musician Jeff Wood of Talladega. Wood specializes in horns and band directing. He is director for the Heritage Hall Jazz Band in Talladega. During the second session, percussionist Dave Herring, who also plays in the Jazz Band, will bring a rock band to perform for an end of camp party. Band members will also demonstrate and explain their various instruments. Other special events are still being planned, Moorehead said, who originated Arts Camp in Talladega 18 years ago. Visiting artists this year include Lila Graves and Catie Radney, who along with Moorehead will head up the large canvas projects. Art instructors include Jana Hadley and Jim Gasser. Music teacher Susannah Herring will be on the staff for the second session of camp. Large canvas paintings done in Arts Camp will be offered for sale at end of camp art sales held the last day (Friday) of camp. The public is invited to come by and view the art and buy pieces. Arts Camp is open to youngsters age 7 to 13 and it meets at Spring Street Recreation Center. Camp begins each day at 9 a.m. and activities continue until 2 p.m. Music and drama, dance and creative movement and pottery, sculpture, painting and drawing are among the activities. Camp is informal and clothing should be cool and comfortable. Campers will have the opportunity to swim in the pool at the recreation center each day and should bring towels and swimsuits if they wish to participate. Lifeguards will be on duty, but poor swimmers or inexperienced swimmer should bring a life vest to wear. Campers must bring a sack lunch and there are two breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, during which they can have a snack brought from home or visit the vending machines at the recreation center. Tuition for camp is $100 per child, but for a second child from the same family tuition is $90. Registration can be done Tuesday through Friday at Heritage Hall between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or call 761-1364 for more information. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is suggested.
