Of the eight categories that were up for grabs, Mary Beth Harrison won six of them and was named the 2009 St. Clair County Jr. Miss Saturday.
Harrison is the 17-year-old daughter of Jimmy and Tamara Harrison of Leeds and is about to enter her senior year at Moody High School. She beat out five other ladies from across the county.
Harrison won the Spirit of Jr. Miss ($100); Physical Fitness ($200); Self-Expression ($200); Interview ($300); Talent ($300) and the overall title that was worth $2,300.
Kelsey Adams won the Be Your Best Self Essay that was worth $100 while Ann-Marie Riley won the Scholastics that was worth $250.
Casie Crews won first runner-up that was worth $1,000.
For her talent, Harrison performed the classical piece, Toccatina, on the piano.
“I am just so thankful,” said Harrison moments after winning. “First of all I want to thank God because I know I could have never done this without Him. I want to thank my parents also. This whole experience has been so wonderful and I have met the greatest people and I’ve made five new friends. I couldn’t believe it when they called out my name. I will try my best to represent our county well in whatever I do.”
Crews said Harrison did a great job and won over a very good group of elite girls.
“I’m happy to be under her and I’m very excited to finish first runner-up,” Crews said.
The 2008 Jr. Miss winner, Laura Hornsby, relinquished her title to Harrison and said she was so very proud of her.
“She is such an outstanding and Godly young woman,” Hornsby said. “We could not have picked a better representative for our county at the state program.”
Kathy Soltis, program director for the St. Clair County Junior Miss Scholarship Program, said they had a wonderful group of young ladies to work with this year.
“They all have been so much fun and dedicated,” Soltis said. “Mary Beth just came right on out to the front. She is a great representative and we will just be getting her ready for state.”
All total, there was $6,550 given in cash scholarships.
Harrison also received a two-year scholarship to Jeff State in the amount of $7,344. Curves awarded a six-month membership to Harrison.
Tamara Harrison said she thought her daughter done an outstanding job and she and the entire family are just so very proud of her.
“We are proud she will represent St. Clair County as Jr. Miss,” Mrs. Harrison said.
Harrison will compete at Alabama’s Jr. Miss that will be held in Montgomery, January 16-17, 2009.
National sponsors of America’s Junior Miss include the City of Mobile, Mobile County, and the Mitchell Company. Category sponsors include Alabama Power, Encore Rehabilitation, Mobile Gas, Regions Bank, and Wintzell’s Oyster House. The 51st Annual America’s Jr. Miss National Finals will be held in Mobile, June 26-28, 2008.
