Meet Talladega County's new Junior Miss

She won the scholastic and talent, the fitness and self expression, and also took home the Spirit of Junior Miss Award. On top of all that, Cameron McMillan of Talladega became the brand new Junior Miss for Talladega County Friday night and will travel to Montgomery in January to take part in the state Junior Miss event. “I’m still so excited,” she said Monday afternoon following the event. “I had never done anything like that.” McMillan said the experience was one of the most fun-filled she’s had. “I didn’t really get nervous, I was excited about going on stage, even about playing my piano piece,” she said. “I think it was because I knew whatever happened was what God wanted. Having that mind set and believing it helped.” Also knowing she had a lot of support from family and friends helped as well, she said. The new Junior Miss is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gray McMillan III and will be a senior at The Donoho School this year. She plans to attend Auburn University after graduating from high school and pursue early childhood development. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Spanish National Honor Society, the Student Government Association and was class president for her junior class. In the talent segment of the program, McMillan played a piano selection, “Allegro Burlesco Op. 88. Kaitlyn Harper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Harper, received the Be Your Best Self Scholarship Award. She is a student at Sylacauga High School and is a member of the National Honor Society, FBLA, Mu Alpha Theta, Focus, the student council and the journalism class. She hopes to attend the University of Mobile and pursue a career in psychology. Lauren Taunton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Taunton, was named first runner up in the event. She is a student at Sylacauga High School and is a member of the National Honor Society, the student council, the Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta, FBLA and Focus. The mission of the Junior Miss Program is to emphasize education by providing scholarship opportunities to outstanding college bound high school girls and to offer opportunities for personal development. In 2007, America’s Junior Miss celebrated its 50th Annual National Finals, The 2007 winner, Nora Ali of Minnesota planed to attend Harvard University. America’s Junior Miss was founded in Mobile by the city’s Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees. In the late 1950s, the Jaycees established a national scholarship program and incorporated it in 1957. The first national program was held in Mobile in 1958 and 18 states were represented.
