Talladega Pilots name officers, give honors

Laura Nation-Atchison
07-04-2008

Talladega’s Pilot Club has supported its community service projects in the area since 1939, and June 26, the club held its 69th installation of officers and awards dinner at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Outgoing president Nancy Lehe said the club continues to focus on its “Brain Minders” program, an effort to educate, especially youngsters, about protecting themselves from brain injuries; its support of the branch of Pilot for high school girls through the Anchor Club at B.B. Comer School; and maintaining the club as a “Pacesetter” club among Pilot Clubs throughout the world.
Being designated as a Pacesetter club means the individual club has maintained a specific level of support for the Pilot International Foundation.
During this year’s awards dinner, member Cathy Sorell was named the local club’s Pilot International Sweetheart for her efforts in “going the extra mile” for the Pacesetter status, Lehe said.
Sorrell was also installed as the new club president for 2008-09 during the evening.
Other officers installed for the upcoming year are Cookie Adair, president-elect; Nancy Lehe, vice president; Margo Fields, recording secretary; Kathryn Highfield, corresponding secretary; and Gail Jacobs, treasurer.
Directors for the next year are Glennie Irwin, Martha Livingston, Joyce Hubbard, Evelyn Perkins and Virgie Warner.
Presentations made during the occasion included naming Jenny Griffin the club’s Teacher of the Year, and the club’s Pilot of the Year, Nancy Lehe.
The Pilot Club holds one fundraiser each year, the annual Miss Motorsports Pageant coming up July 26 at the Hall of Fame Speedvision Dome.
Entry fees and ticket sales provide funding for the service projects Pilot pursues.
The pageant offers trophies and awards for each of its eight age divisions, and additionally, a scholarship for the winner of The Miss Motorsports division.
Interested participants should contact Kathryn Highfield at 256/362-6508 or Gail Jacobs 256/362-8405, Cookie Adair 256/404-4343 or any other Pilot club member for registration forms or additional information.
Registration forms are also available at The Hall of Fame, the Talladega Chamber of Commerce, First National Bank, Bumble “B’s”, Alexander’s (Oxford) Joyce’s Formal Wear (Hueytown), Lincoln Pharmacy and several other sites in the area.
Among their pursuits in the community, Pilot members volunteer as ushers for performances at The Ritz Theatre, as volunteers for the chamber of commerce when requested and many Pilot members are volunteers with organizations such as the Red Cross, Samaritan House, the Landmarks Foundation, Heritage Hall Museum and Talladega County’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
One of the club’s goals this year is to recruit new members, Lehe said. The club meets twice a month to hold business and board meetings. Those interested in joining may call Kathryn Highfield at 256/362-6508 or Gail Jacobs 256/362-8405, Cookie Adair 256/404-4343.
