For one thing, the art is outstanding. Another thing is, it’s giving skills to people who so much appreciate it. And in the four years that the Arc of South Talladega County has held its ArtPartners Auction, support for the program has resulted in the Arc’s art programs becoming self sufficient. And the way clients feel about the art lessons they take every week at Comer Museum hasn’t waned since they started, said Beverly White, executive director doe the Arc of South Talladega County. This year’s auction is coming up Thursday night and there are 55 paintings, photographs and other works that will be made available. This year’s theme is “An Evening in the Tropics,” and the event begins at 5 p.m. at Comer Museum. Patrons of the program can view the art and enjoy a social hour until the program and live auction begin at 6 p.m. Auctioneer is Steve Wyatt, and there will be beverages, hors d’oeuvres and live jazz to enjoy. Casual cruise attire is suggested to go along with the tropical theme. Tickets to the event are $20. available by contacting White at 256/245-2323. White has announced that Margaret Morton, director of Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement, will be honorary chairperson for the occasion this year. “She’s been involved with the Arc ever since I’ve been in Sylacauga,” White said, who has been in her position for 23 years now. “Margaret is one of the strongest advocates there is for individuals with cognitive, developmental and intellectual disabilities.” There will be 10 pieces of art set aside for the silent auction this year and the rest will be part of the live auction, White said. And new this year, four artists have provided art that will become the “mystery pieces” this year. Leeds pottery maker Larry Allen, and painters Judy Hartsfield, Maurice Cook and Chick Lively have donated pieces for the “mystery art auction,” White said. Paintings in the selection this year include a variety of styles and there are landscapes, still lifes and lots of other paintings among the offerings. ArtPartners is a signature program developed by VSA Arts of Alabama that is designed to provide a socially inclusive environment where local community artists and VSA emerging artists with disabilities can engage in relationship building through one on one participation in the creative arts. VSA Arts of Alabama is a nonprofit organization and an affiliate of VSA Arts, an international nonprofit and also an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. There are approximately 15 artists volunteering their time for the program, working with Arc clients, White said.
