It’s the one place and the one time a year you get to taste the best of everything there is in their kitchens. The Taster’s Luncheon has been hosted by members of First United Methodist Church in Talladega for more than 30 years, and remains a standing item on most people’s calendars. It started with the women of the church doing most of the cooking, but through the years, the number of men turning out a favorite dish for the event has continued to grow, said church member Catherine Smith. “Really, it takes every able bodied person in the church to do it,” she said. “And the ones who aren’t able to do anymore, most of them make a contribution.” The morning of the luncheon, a steady stream of cars arrive at the church to deliver the dishes that will be served. Organizers plan for at least 500 for the luncheon, this year’s coming up tomorrow. There are two seatings, one at 11:30 a.m. and another at 12:30, and tickets are pretty scarce, but do check with the church office (362-2891) just in case if you haven’t already obtained tickets. Tickets are $10 each. Three dining areas are set up and decorated to serve the large number of lunch guests. All kinds of committees have to be formed to make the event a success, from set up to clean up and everything in-between it takes to feed a crowd. This year’s co-chairs for the luncheon are Karen Stephens and Shelby Hicks and co-chairs for the food committee are Jeanne McKinney and Charlene Walker. Handling the set up committee are Gail McMillan, Brenda Hollingsworth and Sally Lawrence and on the decorating committee are Marianne Miller, Catherine Smith and Pat Miller. Lily Overton takes care of the tea this year and Carolyn Phillips is in charge of ticket sales. Martha Gambrell, who first pitched the idea of the luncheon to the church women, is in charge of reservations and Barbara Sweatt heads up the hostess committee. Connie Barnes chairs the clean up committee and Becky Clark took care of publicity.
