Daily Home wins 30 awards in APME contest

04-04-2002

The Daily Home has received 30 awards, 15 of them for first place, in the Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors awards competition for items published in 2001, including Community Service, Photo Portfolio, News Sweepstakes and Sports Sweepstakes.

The newspaper won first place in Community Service and News Sweepstakes for its special focus series, Living in Poverty, which ran the last week of December 2001. The entire editorial staff, including reporters, editors and photographers worked together on the series, which took an in-depth look at the needs facing low-income families and the programs that help them.

The staff contributing to the project includes Carol Pappas, Graham Hadley, Denise Sinclair, Scott Adamson, Josh Johnson, Kyle Shelton, Laura Nation, Michael Seale, Chris Norwood, Joe Schweizer, David Atchison, Gary Hanner, Bob Crisp, Jerry Martin, Janice Keith, Sharon Kent, Patricia A. Douglas and June Winters.

Adamson and Johnson also won Sports Sweepstakes for their coverage of racing at the Talladega Superspeedway.

Crisp, chief photographer, won Photo Portfolio for his entries in the photography section, and Martin took honorable mention in that category.

In the Freedom of Information category, Pappas, the editor and publisher, and Atchison, Pell City beat reporter, grabbed second place for their work uncovering financial problems within the Pell City Board of Education.
