SYLACAUGA

Public invited to community Thanksgiving dinner

By Denise Sinclair
11-16-2006

SYLACAUGA — About 700 meals are expected to be served at the communitywide Thanksgiving dinner next week.

This will be the fourth annual dinner sponsored by Sylacauga’s Promise.

The dinner will again be held at Reaching the World Bible Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal is provided free thanks to many organizations and individuals.

The church is located at 109 N. Cannon Ave.

Free transportation is also available if needed.

Nancy Dickson, spokeswoman for Sylacauga’s Promise and coordinator of the dinner, said volunteers are still needed for this worthwhile event.

“It is so wonderful to see the community come together to provide this Thanksgiving dinner to those in need throughout our area. We have such great partners for the effort,” Dickson said.

Hundreds of pounds of green beans, yams, corn and cranberry sauce were collected through the local schools.

Different churches provided the turkeys, while Avondale Mills gave hams to Sylacauga’s Promise earlier this year for the meal.

Promise member Clara Curtis worked with 20 local churches to have desserts ready for the dinner. Each church is giving three cakes for the meal.

Coosa Valley Medical Center will prepare the food.

A Carving Committee will slice hams and turkeys Wednesday, Nov. 22, starting at 10 a.m. in the kitchen of First United Methodist Church.

There is also a Set Up and Decorating Committee to prepare the church for the dinner Wednesday.

Many volunteers give up time with their families on Thanksgiving Day to serve the meal and make home deliveries to those who can’t come to the church.

“We do need some delivery drivers, too,” Dickson said.

She encouraged those who can to come to the church and have their meal there. “It is a good time to fellowship with everyone,” she said.

The public can come to the church on their own, be transported to the church, pick up their meals at the church or have their meals delivered to their homes.

Dickson said reservations for the meals, transportation, and deliveries must be made through Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement by calling 256-245-4343.

“We request you contact us by noon Tuesday, Nov. 21, for any of these,” Dickson said.

Last year about 600 meals were served for the communitywide ministry that touches others, she said.

“This is a perfect time for anyone who is home alone this holiday to come to the church for dinner and fellowship,” Dickson said.

Helping with the effort is the Sylacauga Housing Authority, SAFE, Ministerial Association, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Coosa Valley Medical Center, Sylacauga and Talladega County School Systems, and others.
