CHILDERSBURG — The Police Department is continuing to seek the public’s help in locating two men who robbed Superior Bank March 2.Police Chief Chuck Brown said it is the first such robbery he recalls in Childersburg. The department hopes area residents may have some information that will lead to the arrests and convictions of the robbers.
Investigator Shane Burnette said the bank, located along U.S. 280 across from Winn-Dixie, was robbed at 3:12 p.m. by two armed men wearing masks. According to reports, the men were armed with a 9-mm automatic handgun.
The first suspect was described as a black male, more than 6 feet tall, weighing about 160 pounds and of medium build. The second suspect was described as being between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-9, of medium build and weighing about 165 pounds.
The first suspect was wearing a white mask and an afro wig during the robbery, while the second suspect was wearing a toboggan and black mask.
According to police reports, both suspects knocked open the bank door, yelling and telling everyone to get down. The first suspect jumped over the counter and went to the cash drawers and stationary vault, while the second suspect stayed by the door.
The tellers and individuals in the bank were told to stay on the floor. The first suspect then took the money, and both left through the front door.
Burnette said it only took about two minutes for the suspects to enter, rob and exit the bank. They left with a little more than $28,000.
The two men fled the scene in what was later discovered to be a stolen white, four-door Oldsmobile.
Burnette said it is believed they had another vehicle ready to switch to. They abandoned the stolen Oldsmobile in the Childersburg Cemetery behind the Church of God, where police found it.
The car is in police custody, and Burnette said it may have had an 11 county tag on it prior to the bank robbery.
“We need to know if anyone saw the (Oldsmobile) prior to 3 p.m. and if anyone was in the area of the Childersburg Cemetery between 3 and 3:20 p.m.,” Burnette said.
He said he hopes someone may have seen a vehicle in the cemetery during that timeframe. If so, it is possible the vehicle was the one the suspects switched to following the robbery.
The department released photographs of the stolen car, as well as the suspect not wearing a mask in the hopes that someone might recognize them.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Burnette with the Childersburg Police Department at 256-378-5568. Callers can remain anonymous.
The case is under investigation by the Childersburg Police Department and the FBI.
