12 local schools to join state's Pre-K program

07-30-2008

HUNTSVILLE — Gov. Bob Riley has announced the locations of 107 new pre-kindergarten classes that will allow an additional 1,926 young Alabamians to enroll in the program. The increase brings the number of students to 3,384.

A dozen local schools will be joining the program, including four each in Calhoun and Talladega counties, two in Cleburne County, and one each in Clay and Randolph counties.

Alabama's program has been rated as one of the best in the country but receives low marks for only serving about two percent of the states' four-year-olds.

Calhoun County participants will be Ohatchee and Piedmont Elementary, Students Achieving Knowledge Successfully and Faith, Creativity and Achievement, a private day-care center.

In Talladega County, Drew Court Head Start, Talladega City Schools, Cheaha Regional Head Start-Talladega, and Bright Futures, a private school, will participate.

Fruithurst Elementary and Pleasant Grove Elementary will have the program in Cleburne County. The class will be offered at Folsom Head Start in Randolph County and Cheaha Regional Head Start-Lineville in Clay County.
