High costs, lack of funding stall Jeffco 911 hub
BIRMINGHAM — A $30 million price tag and lack of federal funding have halted plans to build a 911 emergency dispatching center serving Jefferson County, Birmingham and a dozen other cities.
County officials had set aside $10 million for the project, but the costs ballooned. They now may buy and outfit an existing building rather than build a new facility to stay within that estimate.
Commissioner Bobby Humphryes says officials may have to stay with an original plan for a center serving only the sheriff's department and volunteer fire departments. He says they had hoped for some federal funding that never came.
Sheriff Mike Hale urges county leaders to continue lobbying for federal money, even if it takes more time.
