Hearing postponed in trial for slaying of Jimmie Lee Jackson

08-05-2008

MONTGOMERY — The next court date for a former Alabama state trooper accused of a killing during a civil rights demonstration in Marion in 1965 has been delayed.

District Attorney Michael Jackson says the pretrial conference for James Bonard Fowler has been postponed from Thursday to Sept. 11.

Fowler was indicted by a Perry County grand jury last year on murder charges. A member of the all-white state trooper force at the time, Fowler is accused of shooting Jimmie Lee Jackson, a black man, at a civil rights demonstration in Marion. Fowler maintains the shooting was in self defense.

Fowler's trial is still scheduled for the week of Oct. 20.
