2 killed in airplane crash near Huntsville

08-07-2008

BROWNSBORO — Two men were killed Tuesday afternoon when a Piper Super Cruiser crashed on takeoff at the Moontown Airport in eastern Madison County.

Ricky Weldon, operator of Rinet Air Service at the air strip off U.S. 72, was flying the three-seater. His passenger was Stan Summerlin, co-owner of The MAiZE, a cornfield that's been turned into a popular maze every Halloween since 2003.

Madison County Sheriff's Investigator Chad Brooks said the plane crashed at about 2:45 p.m. then caught on fire. The aircraft landed in a soybean field just off the runway.
