State GOP ask Bright to return some gifts
MONTGOMERY — County Republican Party chairmen from across the 2nd Congressional District in south and central Alabama on Tuesday asked Democratic candidate Bobby Bright to return campaign contributions he received from liberal groups.
The Republicans said Bright is claiming to be a conservative in ads and in speeches on the campaign trail. But the letter says Bright has received more than $600,000 from groups such as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's campaign committee.
Bright is the mayor of Montgomery. He faces Republican state Rep. Jay Love in the Nov. 4 general election for the 2nd District seat.
Paul Reynolds, GOP chairman for the 2nd Congressional District, said Bright claims to be against abortion and to support other conservative causes, while taking money from liberal organizations.
"In Butler County that math just doesn't add up," Reynolds said.
At a news conference Tuesday, held at the Montgomery County Republican headquarters, Reynolds and others displayed a large mock check for $655,775 that was made out to Bobby Bright and said it was from Pelosi.
