Arthur seeks to avoid execution date
MONTGOMERY — Attorneys for death row inmate Thomas Arthur have asked the Alabama Supreme Court not to set another execution date for him.
They filed court papers arguing that the next step in the case should be DNA testing. They say the testing would show whether Arthur was really involved in the 1982 contract killing of Troy Wicker Jr. of Muscle Shoals.
Arthur was scheduled to die July 31, but the Alabama Supreme Court stayed the execution after another inmate confessed to the Wicker slaying. State Attorney General Troy King then asked the Supreme Court to reconsider the stay and set another execution date.
