Daily Home wins Investigative Reporting, Freedom of Information awards

ORANGE BEACH — The Daily Home has won 16 awards from the Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors, including first place honors for Pell City News Editor David Atchison in the Freedom of Information and Investigative Reporting categories.

This is first year investigative reporting has been included in the Associated Press newspaper contest. Atchison won both awards for his reporting on lead contamination at a foundry site in Lincoln.

Daily Home Chief Photographer Bob Crisp won second place in the photo portfolio category.

The entire Daily Home staff, including Features Editor Laura Nation-Atchison, Antrenise Cole, Samantha Corona, News Editor Denise Sinclair, Elsie Hodnett, Joseph Thornton, Chris Norwood, David Atchison, Sports Editor Will Heath, Heather Baggett, Crisp, Jerry Martin, Editor and Publisher Carol Pappas, Managing Editor Graham Hadley and Associate Editor Janice Keith, received second place honors in Community Service for the paper’s series of stories “What If?” The series looked at the people, businesses and events that have helped build successful communities in Talladega and St. Clair counties over the years.

o First Place Best Deadline Reporting: The Daily Home, Chris Norwood, Samantha Corona, “Scene of Destruction”

o Second Place Best Non-Deadline Reporting: The Daily Home, David Atchison, Will Heath, Heather Baggett, Chris Norwood, Laura Nation-Atchison, Denise Sinclair, Antrenise Cole, Samantha Corona, Elsie Hodnett, Joseph Thornton, “What If?”

o Honorable Mention Business News: The Daily Home, Denise Sinclair, “Sylacauga’s Little Black Book”

o Second Place Best Sports Deadline Reporting: The Daily Home, Sports Staff, “Daily Home Racing Edition”

o First Place Best Spot News Photography: The Daily Home, Bob Crisp, “Sifting through the Rubble”

o Honorable Mention Best Spot News Photography: The Daily Home, Bob Crisp, Jim Smothers, “Historic Downtown Block Burns”

o First Place Best Portrait/Personality Photo: The Daily Home, Bob Crisp, “Celebrating Citizenship”

Glenn Stephens, metro editor of The Birmingham News, was elected president of the Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors as the state newspaper group completed its annual convention. Stephens succeeds Graham Hadley, managing editor of The Daily Home.

The organization, made up of Alabama newspapers that are members of the AP newsgathering cooperative, presented awards to winners of its annual journalism contest Saturday night at the Gulf State Park pavilion.

Stephens was elected president for the next year. Other new officers elected by the state APME board were: Ken Tuck, managing editor of The Dothan Eagle, president-elect; and Scott Morris, managing editor of The Decatur Daily, treasurer.

Members of the board of directors elected to a one-year term were: Bob Davis, editor of The Anniston Star; Kelly Kazek, managing editor of The News Courier in Athens; Michele Gerlach, publisher and editor of The Star News in Andalusia; J.D. Davidson, publisher and editor of The Times-Journal in Fort Payne; Curtis Coghlan, managing editor of The Huntsville Times; and Mel Gray, managing editor of the Montgomery Advertiser.
