PELL CITY — A high-speed chase late Tuesday ended with a man being shot by police officers.Information about the incident was still sketchy Tuesday night, and authorities were tight-lipped about the events leading up to the chase and shooting.
Talladega County District Attorney Steve Giddens said late Tuesday night the incident was under investigation and it could take time to sort out everything.
He said the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Talladega County District Attorney’s Office are involved in the investigation. Talladega County authorities were not involved in the pursuit Tuesday.
According to radio dispatch, at about 6:30 p.m., several law enforcement agencies became involved in the chase of a Chevrolet pickup truck traveling eastbound along Interstate 20 in St. Clair County.
The driver of the truck exceeded speeds of 100 mph on I-20, failing to pull over and stop as police cars pursued him, with sirens blaring and blue lights flashing.
Authorities were able to box in the suspect and stopped the vehicle just across the Coosa River Bridge in Talladega County.
According to sources close to the investigation, the suspect attempted to run over police with his vehicle, and officers fired at the driver as he took off again down I-20 east.
Officers were able to stop the truck once again, and the man was taken into custody.
The suspect was transported to a hospital and was said to have a single gunshot wound to the hand.
The suspect was not identified by authorities.
According to sources, one Pell City police officer suffered minor injuries in the incident and at least one Riverside police car was damaged in the pursuit.
Alabama State Troopers, Pell City and Riverside police and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department were involved in the incident.
