Crowd braves cold to honor veterans, POWs, MIAs in Pell City

More than 100 people attended the Veterans Day program in Pell City Tuesday morning.
PELL CITY — Despite the cold weather Tuesday morning, more than 100 people gathered in front of the St. Clair County Courthouse for a Veterans Day program.

The program, which began about 10:30 a.m., lasted about 45 minutes.

The event recognized all veterans, but special focus was on the local veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

During the ceremony, the names of veterans who died during times of war were read. The list included 160 veterans: 34 from World War I, 98 from World War II, 12 from the Korean War, 14 from the Vietnam War and two from the Iraqi War.

“Our veterans protected so many freedoms we enjoy today,” said St. Clair County District Court Judge Phil Seay, who recognized special guests and elected officials.

Joe Johnson, USAF-R, past commander for the Al McLaughlin Chapter 27 of Disabled American Veterans, welcomed those who were present for the program, and Steve Pederson opened the program with a prayer.

The Pell City High School Junior ROTC Color Guard presented the colors, while Eden Elementary School fourth-grader Jameson Willis sang “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Also, throughout the program, local vocalists Steve Shafer and Teresa Carden sang patriotic songs.

Margaret Rose, senior vice commander for the DAV Chapter 27, led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Before the “Roll Call of Fallen Heroes” by John “Mike” Church, there was a moment of silence to honor POWs and MIAs.

Myra Keef, president, Ladies Auxiliary to Harold Spangenberg Post 4758 VFW, read her poem, “Freedom Isn’t Free.”

Johnson recognized many of the organizers of the program and various commanders for local veterans’ groups.

The St. Clair County Combined Veterans Honor Guard performed the rifle salute and played taps.

Shafer closed the program with the benediction, “Amazing Grace.”

Veterans Day first began as a way to celebrate the end of World War I — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — but has become a day to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.
