Gray, Thompson win vacant seats on school board

ST. CLAIR COUNTY — Two vacant seats on the county Board of Education were decided by Tuesday’s primary election, leaving no need for a runoff in July.

For the Odenville District seat, Allison Gray defeated David Nicely with 1,880 votes to 1,533.

Gray said she would like to thank her supporters and all of those who voted for her.

“I am looking forward to working with the St. Clair County Board of Education,” Gray said. “I thank everyone for their vote of confidence. I pledge to do what I can to make the St. Clair County School System the very best.”

There were no Democratic candidates in the race.

For the Ashville/Steele District seat on the board, incumbent Randy Thompson won the position with 2,332 votes to his opponent’s, Laura Slezak, 1,063.

“I would like to thank the citizens of St. Clair County for their vote of confidence, and I hope to represent them to the best of my ability for the next six years for the betterment of St. Clair County schools,” Thompson said.

There were no Democratic candidates for this school board seat either.

No runoff election is necessary for either seat.

State races — Democrats

In state races, St. Clair County voters cast 579 Democratic ballots in the primarily Republican county.

On the Democratic ballot for U.S. senator, Vivian Davis Figures earned 377, Johnny Swanson II earned 118 and Mark Townsend earned 74.

For U.S. representative, 4th Congressional District, Nicholas Sparks garnered 37 votes while Greg Warren earned 15.

For Court of Criminal Appeals Place No. 1, Steve Dodd collected 264 votes to Clyde Jones’ 303 votes.

For Court of Criminal Appeals Place No. 2, Jeff Duffey earned 130 votes, Jon Hayden earned 102 and Aimee Cobb Smith earned 336.

State races — Republicans

Republicans in St. Clair marked 5,649 ballots of the 6,228 total ballots cast.

For U.S. senator, Jeff Sessions garnered 4,885 votes to Earl Mack Gavin’s 569.

For Court of Criminal Appeals Place No. 1, Peggy Givhan earned 469 votes, Beth Kellum earned 1,457, Lucie McLemore earned 651, and Teresa Bearden Petelos earned 1,816.

For Court of Criminal Appeals Place No. 2, Duncan Crow garnered 594, Chris Mixon received 1,337 and Mary Windom earned 2,594.

For Public Service Commission president, Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh received 2,382 votes to Matt Chancey’s 1,223 and Jack Hornady’s 1,256.

For State Board of Education District 3, Stephanie Bell earned 3,243 votes to Troy W. “Skip” Smithwick Jr.’s 1,453.

Only 12 percent of St. Clair’s more than 51,000 registered voters turned out to cast a ballot in the primary election.
