SYLACAUGA — If you were upset that Sylacauga’s Promise Day was cancelled Saturday, May 3, due to rain, don’t hold your head down… The committee met Friday to discuss rescheduling the event. After a few dates were thrown around, Sunday, June 8, was the date the committee finally decided on. Families are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to Noble Park for the event, which begins at 2 p.m.
The Sylacauga’s Promise Committee is continuing the theme from previous years of celebrating the city being named to the 100 Best Communities in the Nation for Young People, three years in a row.
“In the seven years that we’ve held this event, this was the first time we had to cancel,” said Sylacauga’s Promise Chairwoman Margaret Morton. “Those odds are pretty good. All we’ve ever had before is a small shower or a breeze of wind. Everything for the event is ready to roll; all we have to do is show up.”
Morton said the only thing left to do for the event is to advertise it and contact the youth who were originally scheduled to perform to see if the new date will work. Morton and other committee members agreed that contacting church groups to possibly provide entertainment and help with the cleanup would be a good idea.
“The point of Promise Day is for these young people to be able to share their talents,” she said. “They’re the people we’re here to celebrate.”
In the event of rain, the committee is working on finding an alternate location to be used as a plan B.
The committee will meet again on Friday, May 30 at noon to finalize plans for the event.
Sylacauga’s Promise focuses on five promises for the youth in the community: caring adults, safe places, healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others.
