Chamber will recognize community leaders at banquet Wednesday

By Antrenise Cole
03-02-2008

The Childersburg Chamber of Commerce annual banquet will be held Thursday, March 6, at Bella Luna.

The theme is “2008 Red Carpet Extravaganza.” The Childersburg citizens who will give out the awards will be dressed as characters from shows people have grown to love, such as Lucy from “I Love Lucy,” Ernest T. Bass, Barney Fife, Patsy Cline and Saturday Night Live’s Spartan Cheerleaders.

Pete Storey, Chamber of Commerce executive director, said each person will perform a skit before giving out the award.

“We’re a little bit nervous about doing it because this is our first time doing something like this,” he said. “No one wants to mess up, but so what if we have a little glitch.”

Some of the awards that will be announced are the hall of fame, business and industry awards, policeman and teacher of the year.

“The awards show them that we appreciate the contributions they make to the community,” Storey said. “We look at what businesses have done. It’s important to see people are doing things for the community because it encourages others. We also give an award for the teachers, to give them a little extra recognition. We sometimes take our teachers for granted.”

Storey said several door prizes will be given away, and Wal-Mart donated a television to be raffled off at the event.

Local business Pro-M Studio will provide photography.

City Limits is catering the food for the banquet. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m.

Storey said people in the community are looking forward to the banquet.

“Ticket sales have really increased in the last day or two,” he said. “The banquet is formal attire-optional and people seem to really be excited about that. People are interested in who is going to be awarded. People always want to know who wins the hall of fame award, and the other awards also add excitement to the event.”

Tickets are no longer available for the banquet.
