TALLADEGA COUNTY — During the past week, 32 agencies in the 31 county Northern District of Alabama fanned out across the district and started knocking on doors, eventually arresting 271 people and clearing more than 450 warrants, according to U.S. Marshal Martin Keely.Operation FALCON (Federal and Local Cops Organized Nationally) kicked off June 15, when various state and local officials being sworn in as Special Deputies Marshals, which “empowered officers to cross traditional lines of jurisdiction in the district to track down and arrest targeted fugitives throughout the week that ended June 21,” according to Keeley.
Locally, a host of federal agencies including the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District, the Marshals, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Drug Enforcement Administration; U.S. Postal inspectors; U.S. Secret Service, Social Security Office of the Inspector General, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, state Probation and Parole Department and the Alabama Air National Guard worked extensively with the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office, Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, and police departments for Childersburg, Lincoln, Sylacauga and Talladega.
Other local jurisdictions involved in “Operation FALCON” included the sheriff’s offices of Calhoun, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Shelby and Tuscaloosa counties, and the Alabaster, Anderson, Anniston, Birmingham, Florence, Hoover, Hueytown, Huntsville, Rogersville, St. Florian and Tuscaloosa police departments.
The drug task force for Calhoun-Cleburne County was also a major participant.
Each of the agencies and officers involved were presented with plaques and certificates of appreciation following the press conference.
According to St. Clair County District Attorney Richard Minor, no FALCON arrests were made in St. Clair that he was aware of, and no St. Clair agencies were included on the lists handed out at a press conference in Birmingham Wednesday morning.
According to Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force Commander Jason Murray, a total of 68 people had been arrested in Talladega County as of Friday afternoon (Murray was out of town during Wednesday’s announcements) on 101different warrants. Of those, 78 were for unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, 23 were for possession of or manufacturing a controlled substance.
A total of five new cases were also made from “Operation FALCON” as well, including an additional count of manufacturing a controlled substance in the first degree charge against Leslie Marie Magouirk, 24, of Munford.
“We got a pretty good hit in Munford,” Murray said.
“There were actually eight different meth labs within the residence, including two in the chicken house,” Deputy Marshal Keith Blankenship said after the press conference. “We had warrants on the female subject there, and got an additional manufacturing warrant for her based on what we found in the house.”
In addition to Magouirk, Katherine Suzann Ferguson, 22, of Lincoln, picked up an additional distribution case when her warrant was served on her, and fresh cases were made against Jason Chatman, 23, of Alpine (possession of marijuana in the first degree and gun charges), Jonathan Crowfoot, 22, of Childersburg (possession of marijuana in the first degree), and Eric Satterwhite, 35, of Lincoln (possession of marijuana in the first degree and possession of a controlled substance).
Murray said 48 of the arrestees in Talladega County were served with warrants and processed at the security area of the Talladega Superspeedway. The others were either incarcerated and served in jail, while the remainder turned themselves in.
Several of the individuals rearrested last week pleaded guilty to older charges at a status call earlier this week.
Keeley said the bulk of the fugitives being sought have been captured, but there are still a few remaining at large.
Although all of the arrests in Talladega were for drug related crimes, in other jurisdictions the nature of the warrants was somewhat more diverse. Statewide, there were some 157 narcotics related arrests, 35 burglary cases, 16 robbery cases, two vehicle theft cases, 18 financial fraud cases, 11 sexual abuses cases, eight assaults, two homicides, and four weapons violations. Most will be tried in state court, although some may play out in federal court as well.
Two sex offenders from Calhoun County were arrested in Florida and Iowa for failure to register and will be brought back to Alabama for failure to register.
Manufacturing a controlled substance in the first degree is a Class A felony, punishable upon conviction by 10 to 99 years or life in prison.
Manufacturing in the second degree and distribution of a controlled substance is a Class B felony, punishable on conviction by two to 20 years in prison.
Possession or receiving of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana in the first degree are Class C felonies, punishable by one year and one day to 10 years in prison.
