TALLADEGA COUNTY

Task force makes felony drug arrests

By Chris Norwood
09-17-2008

TALLADEGA COUNTY — The simultaneous execution of two search warrants by the Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Department and the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, resulted in 11 people being arrested on felony drug charges.

Patrick McSwain, 51, was one of the two primary targets of the searches. He was arrested initially on charges of trafficking in cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana in the second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia. His total bond initially was set at $100,000. At the Talladega County Jail, McSwain was served with four more warrants for distribution of a controlled substance — specifically crack cocaine — with an additional $100,000 bond on each, according to task force commander Jason Murray.

Frederick Parker Cole, 51, was the other main target. He was initially charged with possession of a controlled substance (crack), possession of marijuana in the second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia. His total bond was set at $50,000.

Cole was served with distribution of crack warrants Tuesday morning, with an additional $50,000 bond on each.

According to a press release Murray released Tuesday, the warrants were executed at 19 Millhaven St. in Sylacauga and 1450 Shady Lane, Childersburg. Cole and McSwain are believed to have been living at the Childersburg address and operating a crack house at the Sylacauga location.

All of the arrests, including Cole and McSwain, were made at the Sylacauga address. In addition, agents recovered scales, pipes, crack, hydrocodone and marijuana.

Arrested at this location were:

• Vance Smith, 40, possession of a controlled substance (crack) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Johnny Thomas, 39, possession of a controlled substance (crack) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Reginald Riggins, 40, possession of a controlled substance (crack).

• Virgil Fields, 45, possession of a controlled substance (crack) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Rayzine Rice, 30, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana in the second degree, possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Candy Williams, 24, possession of a controlled substance (crack) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Gary Clifton, 37, possession of a controlled substance (crack) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Tammy Perry, 37, possession of a controlled substance (crack), possession of marijuana in the second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bond in all of the above cases was set at $2,500.

An 11th arrest was made at the same location for failure to pay child support.

Trafficking is a Class A felony in Alabama, punishable upon conviction by 10 to 99 years in prison.

Distribution of a controlled substance is a Class B felony, punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

Possession of a controlled substance is Class C felony, punishable by one year and one day to 10 years in prison.

Possession of marijuana in the second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia are misdemeanors.
