All too often, there is a disconnect between decisions made in Montgomery and how they affect the local community back home. That’s why Skip Smithwick of Sylacauga is running for the state Board of Education in the June 3 Republican Primary, and it’s why we support him in that quest.
As a school board member in Sylacauga, he understands the day-to-day issues that mold a successful school and a school system. After all, he has seen those issues firsthand and has taken them on as a working board member.
He understands that the district is more than just Montgomery, it is places like Talladega County, Cherokee, Elmore, Shelby, Chilton, Coosa and Autauga counties. And it takes the kind of understanding he has gained in dealing with the local school system, having children and grandchildren in public schools and being married to a teacher to ensure that all systems move forward under the umbrella of the state.
It is for those reasons that we endorse the candidacy of Smithwick for state school board, knowing that he will put his local experience to work on the state level for a better education system across Alabama.
