Alabama voters head to the polls Tuesday in Democratic and Republican primaries, an opportunity to have their say in choosing their elected leaders. From the U.S. Senate to statewide offices on the appellate court, board of education and Public Service Commission to various county races, voters in Talladega and St. Clair counties have a long list from which to choose.
In recent days, the newspaper has offered endorsements in contested, statewide races, and we recap those recommendations in both primaries today:
O U.S. Senate – Jeff Sessions, Republican; Vivian Davis Figures, Democrat
O Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 1 – Teresa Bearden Petelos, Republican; Clyde Jones, Democrat
O Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 2 – Chris Mixon, Republican; Jon Hayden, Democrat
O State Board of Education, District 3 – Troy W. “Skip” Smithwick Jr., Republican
O President, Public Service Commission – Jack Hornady, Republican
Nominees for the respective parties and offices will face each other in the November general election.
We remind voters that they must declare a party in Tuesday’s primaries, casting ballots in only one party primary. There is no split ticket voting in a primary.
And we encourage voters to participate in the process. It is a right and a privilege to vote, and those eligible should cast their ballots in Tuesday’s primaries.
