Public meeting on theater a good idea

08-21-2008

It has been one of the most anticipated projects in the history of Sylacauga — a multi-screen movie theater that surely would enhance the quality of life for citizens.

Officials say restaurants and other retail entities are waiting in the wings, expected to commit to building in the area of the theater if it comes to pass.

But a financial snag has slowed the project, and before city officials decide their next step, they did the right thing by asking for input from the public.

Under a plan proposed by the theater developer, the city would secure a bond issue for part of the financing of the project. There are certainly pros and cons to such a move — using public monies for a private enterprise being one of the negatives. The pro is that it could bring business to the city that would in turn breed more business while offering citizens more big-city amenities.

It is a quandary for officials who will make that decision, and no matter which way they eventually go, this initial step in stimulating public debate on the issue was the right thing to do for Sylacauga.

More input, more discussion and more information are needed before a final decision is made. And this was a thoughtful first step.
