Tip of the hat: Building renamed in Granger's honor

08-21-2008

It was a fitting tribute to rename the George McFaden Complex at Alabama Industries for the Blind after the man who first ran that facility. It wasn’t because John Granger merely served as its manager, it was also because he took the facility to new heights.

His leadership moved AIB from a small, fledgling operation to one that did tens of millions of dollars in business during his tenure, offering jobs, products and a business model for Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. It became the largest of its kind in the nation.

Granger ably led the effort and built it in those early years, while building a reputation for solid leadership. He now serves on the Board of Trustees for AIDB, and his colleagues didn’t hesitate to name the new building after him.

It is now the John Granger-George McFaden Complex, and officials were wise to add his name to the honor.
