TALLADEGA COUNTY — Alabama State Troopers are investigating a two vehicle accident that killed two people and injured at least five others on Alabama 21 Friday night.

The accident occurred 11 miles north of Sylacauga when a 2013 Ford Fusion collided with a 2003 Ford Focus at about 11:15 p.m.

Silemon Santiago, 28, driver of the Focus, and passenger Areli Jacinto, 23, were both pronounced dead at the scene. According to the troopers, Jacinto was pregnant. Santiago and Jacinto were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Kenneth Latham, 64, of Lincoln, was driving the other vehicle, and was injured.

Also injured in the Focus were four children, ages 1, 6, 7, and 10. All four children were taken to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where they were in stable condition. No word on Lathem’s condition was available Saturday evening.

The cause of the accident, including whether or not alcohol may have been a factor, remained under investigation Saturday.
