Colby Goins, 18, of Childersburg and a 16-year-old male from Sylacauga have been charged in the robbery of an elderly woman at a Hoover supermarket Oct. 28.

Police said the two Talladega teens in a silver car approached an 82-year-old woman for directions in the Publix parking lot on Douglas Baker Boulevard off U.S. Highway 280 while she was loading groceries into her car at about 7:45 p.m.

As the victim approached the vehicle, the passenger grabbed her purse and the driver hit the accelerator. Hoover Police Capt. Jim Coker identified Goins as the passenger.

The purse became entangled with the victim as the car sped off, causing her to suffer several broken bones and cuts. The victim, who police have chosen not to identify, is in the middle of a prolonged recovery period at home after being treated for several days in the hospital.

A Hoover police report lists the victim as being robbed of her purse, debit card and a Social Security Administration card.

Goins was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree assault. The 16-year-old, whose identity has not been released pending court action to convict him, faces the same charges as an adult in the robbery.

The two teens were arrested Wednesday, Nov. 4, after an investigation involving the Hoover, Sylacauga and Childersburg police. Both suspects were being held in the Shelby County Jail, with bond set at $90,000 apiece. Goins can be confirmed as having bond posted - $60,000 for the robbery charge and $30,000 for the assault charge – Thursday, Nov. 5.
