Atkinson beat incumbent District 5 Talladega County Commissioner John Carter 3,282 to 2,898.
This will be his first time serving as an elected public official.
“I’m feeling good and I’d like to thank everyone that has worked with me on this. It was a team effort,” Atkinson said.
“We’re going to move forward and find ways to work with our businesses and work with citizens in our community, to work on problems facing the community and problems facing the county.”
Atkinson said that he realizes the community is in an economic slowdown and wants to find ways to be creative and think outside the box when it comes to solving issues.
“I think we’ll have a stronger more accurate voice in District 5. It’s a new opportunity for all of us,” Atkinson said.
“I just want to thank the citizens for the opportunity to work with them and for them; the only promise I made and I meant it sincerely is ‘I’ll listen, be responsive, and I will do the best job I can for Talladega County and District 5.’
“I think we just need to get down to business.”
Swinford is the first District 1 commissioner to win re-election in 25 years.
Swinford beat his opponent Robert O. Punkin Ford 3,935 to 2,689.
“I was honored that the people in my district thought enough about me to give me four more years to continue what we at the county commission started,” Swinford said.
“I appreciate all the people that turned out and supported me and I think it’s showing that we’ve done a good job and the people appreciate what we’re doing.”
Swinford said he is very appreciative of the citizens who voted for him and appreciative of his opponent who he said ran a clean campaign.
“I appreciate all their help and support and I want to thank my opponent for being upbeat and positive and not being negative and having a negative campaign because I think the people are tired of those kinds of campaigns,” Swinford said.
“My opponent ran a good race, he’s a good man, and I appreciate his handling of his campaign.”
