Boxing is about hitting, and to the uninitiated, it can appear brutal. But more than just fighting, boxing is about discipline and training — of mind and body.

When Samuel Bluster posted a sign outside an empty building in Sylacauga announcing his intention to open a boxing club, he had potential clients asking for membership three months before he planned to open. Bluster said yes, and began teaching how to use their feet, how to place their hands, how to focus their thoughts.

Now that the gym has officially opened for business, Bluster says he already has clients as young as 11 years old and will accept more, provided that they will pay close attention to what he teaches and that an adult accompanies them to training.

Bluster said he wanted to open the gym because he remembers how he felt as a 15-year-old who needed a way to release his tension and relieve the stresses of growing up.

Boxing may not be for every teenager or, for that matter, every adult who needs an outlet for stress, but for those who find it appealing, we are glad to have a professional such as Samuel Bluster in town to teach them the right way.
