“It is a great school and it is a great atmosphere,” Conville said. “It is a small college and it gives you that family and friends’ environment. It is really a positive place to grow up as a person and as an athlete.”
Conville will have teammates David Ellison and Cheston Wesson on the team with him. He will also be surrounded by a decent size group of former Sylacauga students that attend the college.
“It really does,” Conville said. “Dave and Cheston going was a big factor. That means I will have some familiarity there. That means I will always have a little piece of Sylacauga with me.”
Conville will also have his father down there with him. DJ Conville is the coach for the Huntingdon baseball team. This past season, he earned conference Coach of the Year honors. Huntingdon went 31-12 on the season and the younger Conville said it is going to take some time for him to get adjusted to playing for his dad.
“I had to make a decision and when it came down to it I knew I had to play for my father,” Conville said. “I would really like to try to see if I can get alone with him in the mindset that he is my coach and not my dad. That’s going to be a test if I can differentiate those two things. I think it will be fun. I think it is going to be a great experience. When it comes down to it Huntingdon is a great academic school. Lets face it sports isn’t everything, eventually I will have to go out in the real world and a job with one of the best degrees in the state.”
DJ Conville said he is excited to have the opportunity to coach his son for the first time.
“It is very exciting,” the elder Conville said. “I have never been able to coach him. A lot of dads get to coach their sons through Little League, Cal Riken or Babe Ruth. I haven’t been able to do that because I am always coaching down at the college. He had another option or two to decide where he wanted to go to school. He finally made his mind up to come down there. I just left him alone to let him make his own decision. I thought that was important. He weighed all the factors with the education and he knows a lot of guys down there and it feels like home to him. I am sure it is going to make it an interesting dynamic at home for sure. I am tickled to have him.”
Conville said what the Sylacauga group brings to Huntingdon College fits their championship pedigree.
“We have some good kids from Sylacauga and this area to come play ball for us at Huntingdon,” Conville said. “I am excited about having them. They are all good students, they are all good kids, and they are good players from good families. Really all those ingredients is what makes a championship program. All the kids and their family fit
with ease. We are excited about having them.”
Conville said he is going to give maximum effort in everything he does at school.
“They are getting a hard worker,” Conville said. “I have always worked hard. Even if it wasn’t my dad as the coach I was going to give 110 percent where ever I went. My plan is to grow and get better. Hopefully, I can help dad win some games.”
