The school system was recognized as an ENERGY STAR Leader while 13 school sites were awarded individual ENERGY STAR Label awards. This was as a result of the district’s four-year partnership with Energy Education to reduce energy costs.
Dave Galik of Energy Education said this makes Talladega County Schools the only district in the state to receive the Leader award, and its schools now make up 75 percent of the state’s total Label recipients.
“It’s a perfect example of our team wanting to be at the top of their game in everything they do,” said Superintendent Suzanne Lacey.
“Sometimes we just hear about bad news with schools. This is great news,” said Liz Cochran of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
Galik, Cochran and Talladega County Schools energy manager Alex Stewart presented the awards to representatives of each of the school sites. Eleven of these were individual schools while the other two sites were comprised of two schools.
Also at the meeting, Shaw Gaines, an attorney with Gaines, Gaines and Rasco, read the results of the board’s evaluation report of Lacey’s performance as superintendent. She received an “A” grade in each of the 10 categories that were evaluated.
She was evaluated in the capacity of chief executive officer of a school system. Categories included criteria such as community relations and financial management.
The board then approved five new courses to be added at Lincoln High School. The courses were Advanced Placement literature and composition for 12th grade, A.P. United States history for grades 10-12, calculus for 12th grade, contemporary issues for grades 9-12 and public speaking for grades 9-12.
The board awarded a bid of $11,832 to Birmingham Restaurant Equipment Supply Company for immersion blenders and sinks for the Child Nutrition Program.
Bids totaling $425 were accepted for the sale of CNP surplus kitchen equipment to the Winterboro Foundation. Equipment was also sold to Evelyn’s Bakery for $778.
A field trip was approved for a Fayetteville student to attend a Future Business Leaders of America conference in Nashville on July 13-18.
In personnel matters, the board approved 10 new hires, 15 resignations, 18 transfers, one leave-of-absence, one return from leave, 10 non-renewals for certified staff and four non-renewals for support staff.
Forty-five certified employees were granted tenure.
Before the meeting, the board held a reception for 25 retiring employees.
There will be an art show by elementary students at Heritage Hall Museum at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Awards will be at 4 p.m.
