A city official said former Councilman Greg Gossett applied for the city’s street superintendent’s job.
Gossett’s job application was dated Tuesday, the day after he resigned from office, but the city did not receive the application until Wednesday.
When questioned Monday night about whether he was resigning from his office so he could apply for the department head job, Gossett declined comment.
“I’m not going to comment at this time,” he said. “I have two different opportunities. One would take me out of the city daily, and the other one would keep me in the city daily.”
He said people were currently employed in the jobs he sought, “so it would be best for me not to comment now.”
Street superintendent Mike Martin officially retires as the head of the Street Department on Friday.
“I can’t hold this seat and seek other employment,” Gossett said at Monday night’s council meeting.
The salary for the street superintendent ranges from $50,860-$67,871.
“The first consideration in filling of vacancies will be given to the most qualified applicant in the city,” the notice posted for the job states. “If no acceptable applicant is found within the city service, the vacancy will be filled from outside the city service.”
The job requires a minimum of three years management and/or supervision experience. A college degree is preferred, “or supervisory experience in road and street construction and repairs.”
The candidate must also have knowledge of budgets, and the ability to forecast materials and equipment for projects.
As of Wednesday afternoon, five people had applied for the job, including Gossett.
Others who have applied for the job include two Street Department workers, Phillip McCollough and Jonathan Campbell. Also to apply for the street superintendent position are Brian Connely Sr. and John Boyle.
The five candidates are scheduled for interviews Friday morning at City Hall. The mayor and council will conduct the interviews. The interviews start at 8:30 and are slated to last about 15 minutes for each candidate.
“It is the intent of the city to fill vacancies only with persons with the most potential for success,” the job notice states. “If no qualified applicant is available from eligible city employees, the city will initiate outside recruitment.”
