PELL CITY — Logan Martin Lake stores, shores and water were full of people ready for the kickoff of summer.

“We’re kicking ourselves now for not bringing our trailer today,” said Rick Montgomery of Odenville. “It’s beautiful out here today.”

Montgomery and his wife, Kathy, were getting a bite to eat before meeting family out on the lake.

“Summer is here,” he said.

The couple said the Memorial Day weekend is the official, or unofficial, start of summer for the Logan Martin Lake crowd.

“This is the best place to come,” Kathy Montgomery said. “You can lie out in the sun and enjoy family. You maybe can even catch a fish or two.”

Cindy Goodgame, owner of Lakeside Landing Store, RV Park and Marina, captured the weekend for her business with one word — “Slammed.”

“Slammed is good,” she said. “The crowds are excellent, both on the water and in the park.”

Goodgame and her employees were working full throttle, checking out a line of people with drinks, snacks and ice at the Lakeside Landing Store. Some customers were getting campsites, while some were there to get their boats out of storage.

“We have six guys with three tractors getting boats out of storage so people can launch their boats,” Goodgame said.

She said she has noticed an increase in business around the lake in the past three months, but the crowds have really hit the lake this weekend, the start of the summer boating and swimming season.

“I’m thrilled to death,” she said.

Stephanie Harles of Talladega and her twin daughters, Paige and Olivia,, were enjoying the new beach at Lakeside Park Saturday.

“I love the new beach,” Harles said.

She said they only recently moved to the area, and this was their first trip to Lakeside Park.

Harles said it is a great city park.

“It’s nice to have everything all in one complex,” she said. “The sports fields, beach, walking path, the water, the big playground and picnic areas — it’s a great place for the kids.”
