Derrick DeCarlo Arnold, 33, is due to be arraigned June 25 by Talladega County Circuit Judge Julian King.
The four counts all deal with the killing of Jerome Garrett Jr. in the Mill Village outside Sylacauga June 25, 2011. Two of the counts allege Garrett was killed during a robbery involving a weapon and the fact that serious injury was caused. The other two counts allege Garrett was killed during a burglary under the same circumstances, according to the indictment.
Arnold was arrested by the U.S. Marshal Service about a month after Garrett’s death. He and Deisha Evonda Collins Jemison, 35, of Talladega, were both taken into custody in Gadsden in July 2011. Jemison was charged with hindering prosecution and has not been indicted as of Friday afternoon.
Investigators at the time of the shooting said Garrett and Arnold had gotten into a violent altercation at Garrett’s home on Tuscaloosa Avenue in the Mill Village that resulted in both men sustaining gunshot wounds. Arnold was treated and released at Regional Medical Center in Anniston. Talladega County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and found Garrett’s body on the side of the road, dead from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.
The Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force also participated in the hunt for Arnold.
If convicted, Arnold faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or death by lethal injection.
