TALLADEGA — Mt. Canaan Baptist Church is set to open the doors on its newest addition, the Talladega Family Life Center.

Dr. Horace Patterson, senior pastor at Mt. Canaan, said the 16,500 square foot multi-purpose facility will open its doors to the public Sunday at 2 p.m.

The center will offer many beneficial programs and activities, and will also house the new Talladega Regional Hall of Fame.

The family center, located across from Mt. Canaan at 423 W. Battle St., will feature a 10,000 square foot gymnasium with raised stage, a 6,300 square foot banquet room, a commercial kitchen and a game room. The center will be available to host community events, receptions, meetings and other special occasions.

“God has provided a facility whereby our church members and the community can host events that glorify Him,” Patterson said. “Any event held will be consistent with Christian principles, beliefs and doctrine.”

The center will also offer many programs such as a daycare, counseling and tutorial services. The daycare program will not only benefit young children, but will also provide care for seniors and disabled persons. Counseling will be available for such issues as employment, marriage, goal setting and budgeting. Other programs focus on home ownership and youth development.

“We want to offer programs and services for the youth, our senior citizens and the community held in spaces that are safe, encourage a sense of community, fellowship and joy, and that are reflective of God’s love for how we treat one another,” Patterson said.

The facility will also feature the new Talladega Regional Hall of Fame, which will contain three branches: Southern history, cultural enrichment and community enablers.

The Southern history branch will deal with African-American and general history from the region, cultural enrichment will display history through quilting and the community enablers branch concerns businesses, companies and organizations that have made a difference in the area. The Class of 2011 will be the inaugural class inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Those wishing to participate in a guided tour of the facility should be present at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Refreshments will be served following the tour. For more information about the Talladega Family Life Center, and its uses and availability, call 256-761-2640.
