“I’m going to try and do this without crying or breaking down, but it’s time for me to seek other employment,” Gossett said. “I’ve tendered my resignation letter. I just signed it.”
He told the mayor and council that he enjoyed working with them.
“But I have considered this and prayed about it, and it’s the best thing for me to do,” Gossett said. “I can’t hold this seat and seek other employment.”
Gossett, 54, was asked if one of the jobs he seeks is a city position, which will open at the end of the month with the retirement of street superintendent Mike Martin.
“I’m not going to comment at this time,” he said. “I have two different opportunities. One would take me out of the city daily, and the other one would keep me in the city daily.”
He said people are currently employed in the jobs he seeks, “so it would be best for me not to comment now,” he said.
Gossett has served almost two terms as the District 1 representative on the council.
Mayor Bill Hereford said Gossett has always been there, volunteering his service to the city and to the community.
“We appreciate your service,” Hereford said.
Council members also lauded Gossett’s service to the city.
“Thank you Greg for all you’ve done for the city and continue to do for this city,” Councilwoman Dot Wood said.
Councilman Donnie Guinn told Gossett he enjoyed working with him, and he served as a sounding board for him.
“It’s been an honor serving with you,” said Guinn, who also announced he will not seek another term in office for personal reasons.
Councilman Donnie Todd also commended Gossett for his work.
“You’re a good councilman and a good friend,” Todd said.
Gossett was first elected to the District 1 council seat in 2004. His second term was to expire in November.
Gossett said if he does not get either of the jobs he seeks, he will run again for the District 1 council seat in July.
