RIVERSIDE – The Town Council unanimously approved the purchase of waterfront property for a public park at Tuesday’s meeting.
“We are purchasing the old D & S Marina for park property,” Mayor Rusty Jessup said.
Jessup said the council will pay approximately $310,000 for the old D & S Marina, located across from Town Hall along Depot Street.
“It will take about 30-60 days to finalize the purchase,” he said.
Jessup said funding for the marina came from federal grant money, some state funding, some county funding, and some funding from Riverside.
“It took considerable effort to coordinate the four branches of government, but the end result will be well worth it for years to come,” he said.
Jessup said the council plans to hold discussions on how best to utilize the property. Possible improvements include repairs to the three piers, opening the convenience store, offering gasoline for purchase, public restrooms, and park facilities such as picnic tables, running water, and possibly a small campground.
“Our first order of business will probably be repairs, upgrades, and maintenance of the docks and shoreline,” he said. “With the deepwater slough, individuals can launch boats year-round, even when the lake is at winter pool.”
Councilwoman Joyce Silvers said she thinks the marina is a great opportunity for Riverside.
“It gives us the opportunity to increase tourism, and hopefully add more business revenue to the town,” she said.
Councilman Rob Hayes said he is concerned about the cost of bringing the marina up to a useable condition.
“The building itself appears to be in pretty good shape, but we want to bring the public-use facilities up to par,” he said. “I think this can be a very positive thing for Riverside.”
Councilwoman Rachelle Painter said she thinks the marina will bring individuals seeking lake access back to Riverside.
“This will give us more public access to the lake, as well as increase our park property,” she said.
Councilman Kenny Womack said the marina will open up the Coosa River to the public.
“This will bring people to Riverside,” he said. “We hope to draw some major events to our town.”
Councilman Jimmy Hollander said the marina is well worth the price.
“It is on the water, and has the opportunity for a good return on our investment,” he said. “It will add real assets to our town. I think it will really make a positive difference.”
Several residents attending the council meeting also expressed positive feedback over the council’s decision to purchase the marina.
