The school received 52 cases of paper last Wednesday thanks to the generosity of churches in the Sylacauga area. Evangelist Bryan Taunton, of FootWash Ministries, was one of the organizers of the donation and said the churches just wanted to help educators and students in need.
“We decided we wanted to do something for the city and we knew the Sylacauga High School had not received some of the federal funding that other schools in the state had, so the churches collectively came together to get the paper,” Taunton said.
Reaching the World Church, pastored by the Rev. Henry Looney; First Baptist Church of Sylacauga, pastored by the Rev. Tim Childers; Mignon Baptist Church, pastored by the Rev. Todd Reeves; The Sanctuary, pastored by the Rev. Freddie Edwards; and Odena Baptist Church, pastored by the Rev. Danny Courson, all contributed to the donation.
“It kind of started with some of the churches back in February when we had an evening of hope and encouragement,” Taunton said. “Several of the churches stayed in communication and bonded together to form the Marble City Ministers Covenant Group. They have been coming together in prayer and decided they wanted to do something.”
Sylacauga High School principal Matt Hubbard said the school was thrilled to get the donation.
“The faculty, staff and student body would like to thank Mr. Bryan Taunton of FootWash Ministries and all of the local churches that donated paper to our school,” Hubbard said.
“This is such a wonderful representation of our community and how we come together for the enrichment of our children. Our teachers were so thrilled about receiving this donation; it was like Christmas in August.”
Taunton said he has already heard from several teachers expressing their appreciation for the donation.
He also said there is interest in making some kind of donation to other Sylacauga city schools, as well as the B.B. Comer schools. In addition, he said any individuals, groups or churches interested in donating or volunteering for the schools can contact him by telephone at 205-746-8864 or by e-mail at btaunton@footwashministries.org.
