The Police Department reported Wednesday the arrest of a 19-year-old Sylacauga man for first-degree rape charges.

Capt. Chris Carden stated in a release the crime allegedly occurred around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victim, a 65-year-old woman from Marbury, told police she was approached by the offender behind the Payton Park Shopping Center on U.S. 280.

Medical staff at Coosa Valley Medical Center treated and released the victim. Carden said shortly after receiving the report, police found the suspect in close proximity to the scene of the alleged incident.

Police arrested the suspect and transported him to Talladega County Jail, where he remained in custody Wednesday. The suspect had an initial appearance in Circuit Court, where his bond was set at $500,000.

The Daily Home does not release the names of victims in sex-related crimes. Suspect names are not released until indictment.

Police asked anyone with additional information concerning the case or other ongoing investigations to contact the investigations division at 256-401-2464. Information can also be reported anonymously through the departments automated tip line at 256-249-4716.
