SYLACAUGA — A local business will be sponsoring a week of sporting events and a block party the first week of May.
Allen Sanders, owner of Marble City Grill, has organized “Marble City Super Sports Week and Block Party.” The event will run from May 1-8, with the day-long “family oriented” block party taking place on the final day.
According to Sanders, the event has a schedule of sporting events including: a 5K run, mountain bike and road bike races, a golf tournament, beach volleyball, 3-on-3 basketball, tennis tournament, racquet ball tournament, trail run and flag football competition.
In a release about the week, Sanders writes the block party on Saturday, May 8, will include a crawfish boil, local bands performing and slides and rides for kids.
Sanders told City Council members last month that all the money to fund the event will be raised through sponsors. The money from the event itself will be donated to the Boys Club of Sylacauga.
An event of the same name was previously hosted by a local bank.
“Many of you might remember the Super Sports Week that First National Bank sponsored at one time,” the release stated. “Well, the Super Sports Week is back and it’s bigger and better.”
The sporting events will take place at various locations in the city including Yates and Noble Park and the Sylaward Trail. Sanders initial proposal said the block party would run from 4-11 p.m.
Sanders previously said the block party would have food sold from several different businesses including Pinchers, Downtown Barbecue and Raspberry Bakery, along with Marble City Grill. Money raised from food sales would also go towards the Boys Club.
